Neurorights Arcade
The NeuroRight Arcades are interactive installations developed for the artist Roel Heremans featuring game consoles and BCI headphones that use live neurofeedback to engage visitors in exploring the ethical challenges of emerging neurotechnologies. These installations highlight the significance of protecting fundamental NeuroRights and invite participants to reflect on their personal experiences within this proposed ethical framework.
As neuro-wearables and brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) evolve rapidly, they open up unprecedented opportunities to access and influence human cognition. However, the use of these technologies by corporations or governments raises pressing ethical concerns. What happens if these innovations are exploited in ways that compromise individual rights or autonomy? Existing ethical and legal systems struggle to address these challenges.

In response, researchers from the NeuroRights Initiative at Columbia University have identified key rights designed to safeguard mental integrity in this new era:
- Mental Privacy
Your thoughts are your own. No one may access your mind without your explicit consent. - Personal Identity
You retain control over your self-image and mental and physical integrity. No external force may alter them. - Free Will
Your decisions must remain yours. No one may manipulate or restrict your free will. - Equal Access to Mental Augmentation
Cognitive-enhancing technologies should be accessible to everyone on a fair basis. - Protection against Algorithmic Bias
Individuals must not face discrimination or prejudice based on algorithmic profiling.
